The next morning...
The atmosphere inside Lumière Studios was strangely subdued.
Crew members moved quietly between cameras and lighting equipment, sensing an invisible tension they couldn't explain.
Usually, Damiano arrived with effortless confidence. He greeted everyone politely before disappearing into the kitchen set to prepare.
Today...
He acknowledged no one.
He walked past every greeting without a word, his face carved from stone.
His dark eyes were unreadable.
His jaw remained clenched.
Even Marco, who had worked with him for nearly eight years, hesitated before approaching.
"Good morning, Chef."
No reply.
Marco exchanged a nervous glance with the director.
Something was terribly wrong.
Alankrita arrived a few minutes later.
She looked as graceful as ever, dressed in a simple ivory kurta with her long braid resting over one shoulder. A notebook rested against her chest, and a warm smile brightened her face as she greeted the crew.
"Good morning."
Everyone smiled back.
Everyone...
Except Damiano.
For a fleeting moment, their eyes met.
She stopped.
There was something unfamiliar in his gaze.
Not irritation.
Not annoyance.
Something colder.
Something that made her heart skip.
Had she unknowingly offended him?
She searched her memory.
Nothing.
Unable to understand his silence, she forced a small smile.
"Good morning, Mr. Moretti."
He looked at her.
Said nothing.
Then turned away.
The tiny smile disappeared from her face.
"Rolling!"
"Cameras!"
"Action!"
The familiar rhythm of filming began.
Today's recipe celebrated contrasts.
Sweet mango.
Ferocious ghost pepper.
Balance.
Patience.
Precision.
Ironically...
None of those things existed inside Damiano anymore.
He worked with flawless technique.
Every slice was perfect.
Every movement deliberate.
But his answers lacked warmth.
Even the audience watching from the monitors could sense something had changed.
Alankrita tried to guide the interview naturally.
"So... today's dish explores the balance between sweetness and heat."
He nodded silently.
"You've often said that contrast creates harmony."
Another nod.
She hesitated.
Normally he would explain the philosophy behind the dish.
Today...
Silence.
Trying once more, she smiled gently.
"Why did you decide to pair ghost pepper with mango purée?"
He stopped chopping.
The knife rested against the cutting board.
Slowly...
He lifted his eyes.
Not toward the ingredients.
Toward her.
The entire studio seemed to grow still.
His gaze burned into hers.
Then,
"Why didn't you tell me?"
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Alankrita blinked.
"I'm sorry?"
"The truth."
She frowned slightly.
"What truth?"
"The child."
The notebook slipped slightly in her trembling hands.
She stared at him.
For a heartbeat...
She couldn't breathe.
He knew.
How?
The cameras continued recording.
Nobody dared interrupt.
"What child?" she asked softly, though her heart already knew the answer.
"Your son."
Silence swallowed the studio.
Several crew members looked between them in confusion.
Alankrita lowered her eyes briefly.
When she looked back at him, her voice remained composed.
"Yes."
"I have a son."
No shame.
No apology.
Only simple truth.
Damiano took one slow step forward.
"You never thought that was worth mentioning?"
She met his gaze.
"My personal life has nothing to do with my work."
"Nothing?"
His laugh was quiet.
Humourless.
"You've spent weeks asking me about honesty."
Another step.
"Authenticity."
Another.
"Purity."
The last word came out like poison.
"And all this time..."
His eyes hardened.
"You were hiding this."
"I wasn't hiding anything."
Her voice remained soft.
"You never asked."
"I shouldn't have had to ask."
His control was beginning to crack.
"You let everyone believe,"
"I let no one believe anything."
She interrupted him for the first time.
"I came here to do my job."
Nothing more.
Nothing less."
The studio remained frozen.
Every person present knew they should stop filming.
No one moved.
No one even breathed.
Damiano's restraint finally shattered.
"You speak about innocence."
His voice rose.
"You carry yourself like someone untouched by the world."
He laughed bitterly.
"But the entire time..."
He gestured toward her.
"You're already a mother."
Alankrita's fingers tightened around her notebook.
"Yes."
"I am."
"And you never thought that mattered?"
"No."
"It wasn't relevant."
He stared at her as though he had never known her.
"Not relevant?"
The bitterness in his voice deepened.
"You questioned me about purity of ingredients..."
His breathing became uneven.
"...while hiding the evidence of your own impurity."
The word echoed across the silent studio.
Impurity.
Someone behind the cameras gasped.
Alankrita's face turned pale.
Not because she felt ashamed.
But because she had never imagined hearing such a word directed at her.
She swallowed.
Slowly.
Painfully.
Then looked directly into his eyes.
"I never claimed to be pure."
"I never claimed to be anything."
"I simply did my work."
Damiano's anger only intensified.
"You allowed me to believe you were innocent."
"I never asked what you believed."
"You deceived me."
"I did not."
"You lied."
"I never lied."
For the first time...
Her voice trembled.
Not with guilt.
With hurt.
"You created expectations I never promised."
The words struck him.
But instead of stopping...
They pushed him further into the darkness consuming him.
"So tell me."
His voice became dangerously quiet.
"Who is the father?"
She froze.
A single heartbeat passed.
Then another.
The entire studio waited.
Her lips parted.
Closed again.
"I don't owe anyone that answer."
His eyes blazed.
"Convenient."
She flinched.
He saw it.
And still...
He continued.
"Perhaps all this innocence was just another performance."
Those words broke something inside her.
Her eyes filled.
She fought desperately to keep the tears from falling.
She refused to cry.
Not here.
Not before everyone.
Not before him.
Her chin trembled.
Her breathing became shallow.
Yet she stood with quiet dignity.
Looking at the man who had once treated her with respect...
As though she no longer recognized him.
Finally...
A single tear escaped.
It rolled silently down her cheek.
She didn't wipe it away.
She simply closed her notebook.
Held it tightly against her heart.
And whispered,
"...Excuse me."
Without another word...
She turned.
Walked past the cameras.
Past the silent crew.
Past the lights.
Each step was steady.
Only when she reached the studio doors...
Did the quiet sound of a sob escape her lips.
The door closed behind her.
Silence remained.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
Damiano stood in the middle of the set, breathing heavily.
The anger that had consumed him moments ago...
Did not disappear.
Instead...
It left behind something infinitely worse.
Because the last thing he had seen before she walked away...
Was not guilt.
Not deception.
Only heartbreak.
And somewhere deep inside him...
A voice whispered the one truth he refused to hear.
You have just wounded the one person who never deserved your cruelty.
