The grand auditorium slowly emptied.
Doctors gathered in animated discussions around the presentation screens.
Journalists hurried to file breaking reports.
Scientists exchanged business cards, eager to collaborate on what would undoubtedly become one of the most significant medical discoveries of the century.
History had been written.
Yet...
Damiano noticed none of it.
His eyes searched for only one person.
Alankrita.
She stood near the edge of the stage, Raghuveer resting peacefully against her shoulder after the overwhelming afternoon. She gently swayed from side to side, humming a tune so softly that only the little boy nestled against her could hear it.
Damiano drew a slow breath.
This was his chance.
He had to speak to her.
He didn't know whether she would forgive him.
He wasn't even sure he deserved the opportunity to apologize.
But he had to try.
He began walking toward her.
Each step felt heavier than the last.
His heartbeat thundered inside his chest.
Words formed...
Disappeared...
Then formed again.
"I'm sorry."
Would those words ever be enough?
No.
Nothing could erase what he had done.
Still...
He had to say them.
He had almost reached her,
"Beta!"
Dr. Sumitra's affectionate voice echoed across the hall.
Alankrita turned instantly.
The moment she saw the elderly doctor...
Her entire face softened.
"Sumitra Amma..."
Without hesitation, she hurried forward and wrapped both arms tightly around her.
It wasn't a polite embrace.
It was the embrace of a daughter returning home.
She buried her face against Sumitra's shoulder.
For several moments...
Neither woman spoke.
They held each other.
Damiano stopped walking.
He remained where he was.
Watching.
Waiting.
Dr Krishnamurthy stepped forward with his familiar gentle smile.
"Come here, little prince."
He carefully lifted Raghuveer from Alankrita's arms.
The little boy blinked sleepily, then recognised the warm face before him.
A tiny smile spread across his lips.
He giggled.
Then immediately rested his head against Krishnamurthy's chest, perfectly content in the paediatrician's familiar embrace.
The sight melted every heart nearby.
Sumitra slowly pulled back and cupped Alankrita's face.
"So..."
she said, pretending to sound stern.
"Our independent girl repaid every single rupee."
Her fingers lovingly stroked Alankrita's hair.
"So happy now?"
The words were teasing.
But the affection behind them overflowed.
Alankrita's eyes instantly filled with tears.
"I..."
Her lips trembled.
"I had to, Amma."
"You both spent so much because of us."
"You gave Raghu everything."
"You gave me another life."
"I couldn't keep taking from you forever."
Before Sumitra could reply...
Aravind folded his arms dramatically.
"Oh?"
"So that's your excuse?"
She looked toward him.
He shook his head in mock disappointment.
"Repaying us..."
"...you made us strangers, Alankrita."
The words hit her harder than he intended.
"No!"
She immediately protested.
"No, Aravind Baba..."
"It's not like that."
She hurried closer.
"You've all given us far more than money."
"You gave us a home."
"You gave us dignity."
"You gave my son a family."
Her voice became softer.
"I only wanted to stand on my own feet."
She smiled through tears.
"So that one day..."
"...I could proudly say your faith in me wasn't wasted."
Aravind sighed dramatically before placing a gentle hand on her head.
"You foolish girl."
"We never helped you expecting repayment."
"We helped you because you became ours."
Alankrita lowered her head.
Unable to stop crying.
By now...
The rest of the family had joined them.
Don Vittorio Moretti.
Dr. Lavanya.
Arjun.
The grandparents.
Everyone stood around Alankrita and Raghuveer as though they had always belonged there.
Damiano lingered quietly a few steps away.
Invisible.
Or perhaps...
He wished he were.
Dr Sumitra suddenly clapped her hands.
"Oh!"
She laughed.
"In all this excitement..."
"I forgot something."
She gently held Alankrita's wrist and turned her toward the Moretti family.
"I haven't properly introduced everyone."
One by one, she introduced the family.
Then...
She smiled proudly.
"And this..."
She said, placing a hand on Damiano's shoulder.
"...is my eldest grandson."
"Damiano Vihaan Arjun Moretti."
"The celebrity chef I'm always bragging about."
Krishnamurthy gently nudged him forward.
Damiano's feet moved almost mechanically.
Within seconds...
He stood directly before Alankrita.
For the first time since London...
There was no stage.
No cameras.
No interview.
No audience.
Only silence.
She looked up at him.
Their eyes met.
Pain still lingered inside hers.
Regret consumed his.
Neither spoke.
Because neither knew where to begin.
Just then,
"Oh!"
Chloe's cheerful voice shattered the fragile silence.
She looked between them in surprise.
"Alan..."
She laughed.
"He's the chef you interviewed a few months ago, isn't he?"
The words landed like a thunderclap.
Every conversation stopped.
Every head turned.
Lavanya blinked.
"What?"
Arjun frowned.
"You two know each other?"
Krishnamurthy looked from one face to the other.
Sumitra's smile slowly disappeared.
"You've met before?"
Alankrita noticed everyone's confused expressions.
She smiled politely.
Trying to keep the moment simple.
"Yes."
"A few months ago."
"I interviewed him for Lumière magazine."
"It was a professional assignment."
Her tone remained calm.
As though nothing more needed to be said.
Only Damiano knew...
How much had happened after that interview.
And how much damage he had caused.
He lowered his eyes.
Unable to meet the gaze of his own family.
Just then...
A sleepy little whimper escaped Raghuveer.
He rubbed both tiny fists against his eyes.
His lower lip trembled.
"Mama..."
Instantly...
Alankrita stretched out her arms.
Krishnamurthy smiled knowingly and placed the little boy back into her embrace.
The transformation was immediate.
The moment Raghuveer settled against her chest...
His tiny body relaxed.
He hid his face in the curve of her neck.
Within seconds...
His breathing slowed.
He had fallen asleep.
Alankrita instinctively began rocking him.
Slowly.
Gently.
The timeless rhythm known only to mothers.
Damiano couldn't look away.
Every graceful movement...
Every protective instinct...
Every ounce of tenderness she poured into that child...
Pulled at something deep inside him.
Not desire alone.
Something far more dangerous.
A longing he had never experienced before.
A longing...
To belong in the little world she had created around that child.
Dr Lavanya smiled warmly.
"Talli..."
"Why don't you come to lunch tomorrow?"
"Our villa will be full anyway."
"You must come."
Alankrita hesitated.
"I don't know, ma'am..."
"My son..."
Lavanya laughed softly.
"Bring your son."
"Both of you."
"You have a family here too."
The words made Alankrita's eyes shimmer.
She looked around.
At Sumitra.
At Krishnamurthy.
At the smiling faces surrounding her.
Then...
Almost unconsciously...
Her gaze drifted toward Damiano.
He was already looking at her.
Not with anger.
Not with contempt.
But with an intensity that made her heart skip.
She quickly looked away.
"...Okay."
She whispered.
"We'll come."
The family smiled happily.
Only Alankrita knew...
How difficult that one word had been to say.
Because tomorrow...
She would have to walk into the home of the man who had shattered her heart.
And Damiano knew...
Tomorrow might be his only chance...
To ask forgiveness.
